Also known as Monterey Cypress, this timber is light in weight and short grained, not ideal for bowl work so we are only offering it in 3” and 4” spindle blanks.
In the past, we have had Macrocarpa tight enough for bowls but not from this tree.
It turns soft but will take fine detail with careful cutting. Definitely a timber to master the skew on.
It will take oils no doubt, but being old-school – hardwoods for show, softwoods for painting – I regard it as a painting wood but very likely, ideal for those working with colours or stain or whacky finishes.
We will have thinner planks in our plank store later in the year for the flat woodworkers. NB. Live knots might be present.
